If you're reading this, you've probably already made peace with the idea that a good pair of jeans can cost $200, $300, or more. But can you explain why to someone who thinks you've lost your mind?

The honest answer usually involves technical terms — selvedge, ring-spun, rope-dyed — that sound convincing but don't quite land unless the listener already understands what they mean. This piece traces the cost gap from the bottom up: starting with manufacturing cost and working outward.

The Markup Math

Standard apparel retail pricing follows roughly a 3–5x markup over manufacturing cost. Factor in wholesale and brand margins and the gap widens. This means:

The retail price gap is ~15x. The manufacturing cost gap is also 10–15x. This is not mostly marketing layered over identical jeans — the actual inputs are substantially different.

Where Most of the Money Goes: Fabric

Three variables drive fabric cost: spinning method, dyeing method, and loom type.

Spinning Method — Ring-Spun vs. Open-End

Ring spinning is the older method. Cotton fibers are drafted and twisted gradually into yarn, leaving a slightly irregular surface with loose fly fibers. That irregularity is not a defect — it's a structural property that causes indigo to adhere unevenly across the yarn's cross-section. The result, over months of wear, is dimensional fade: high-contrast honeycombs, raking whisker lines, and tate-ochi (vertical) fade that differs by region of the leg.

Open-end spinning (rotor spinning) was industrialized in the 1970s and runs 4–6 times faster than ring spinning. Uniform, smooth yarn at lower cost. Nothing wrong with it for everyday use — but the surface texture that makes ring-spun denim fade with character simply isn't there.

Pick up a ring-spun selvedge fabric and compare it side by side with open-end budget denim: the surface feel is noticeably different. A 14–15oz ring-spun selvedge has a hand and density that a 10–11oz open-end fabric can't approximate, even before a single day of wear.

Every $20 pair uses open-end yarn. No exceptions worth naming.

Dyeing Method — Rope Dyeing vs. Slasher Dyeing

Indigo doesn't chemically bond to cotton the way reactive dyes do. It sits on the surface of the yarn in physical layers. This is the mechanism that produces fading: surface indigo wears away through friction, exposing the undyed core-white cotton underneath.

Rope dyeing builds that structure deliberately. Yarn strands are bundled into ropes and passed through indigo baths multiple times, with oxidation periods between passes. Multiple dye layers accumulate, creating a pronounced core-white structure that produces high-contrast fade as surface layers wear down.

Slasher dyeing processes flat sheets of yarn in a single pass — faster, less suited to the layered dye structure that characterizes dimensional fade.

At NJNL, we think the slasher vs. rope distinction is sometimes overstated in enthusiast circles — what ultimately matters is yarn quality, indigo concentration, and number of dye passes in combination. But at $250+, you should be getting rope-dyed fabric, and it's reasonable to verify.

Loom Type — Shuttle vs. Air-Jet / Projectile

Selvedge denim is woven on shuttle looms — the original technology largely replaced in the 1970s by faster projectile and air-jet looms. Shuttle looms produce fabric about 29–30 inches wide. Modern high-speed looms produce fabric 58–62 inches wide, at 4–8 times the production speed.

Narrower shuttle-loom fabric means more yardage per pair. Slower production speed means higher cost per yard. A 14–15oz heavyweight selvedge from a premium mill can cost 10× per yard compared to what goes into a budget pair — that's not an exaggeration.

The selvedge edge itself (the clean self-finished edge visible when you roll up the cuff) is a natural byproduct of the loom type rather than an independent quality marker. But shuttle-loom fabric does have different weave dynamics — tension, density, surface structure — compared to air-jet-woven denim. Whether that distinction matters to your specific goals is a separate question.

Hardware and Construction

Fabric dominates the cost gap, but construction contributes real dollars.

Stitch type: Chain stitch — one thread forming interlocking loops — is the original denim construction method. It produces characteristic roping and puckering when washed, most visible in the inseam and outseam. LVC (Levi's Vintage Clothing) revived chain-stitching for its reproduction line specifically to capture this aged texture. Pull the wrong thread and a chain-stitched seam unravels completely, which is why mass production moved to lockstitch. Lockstitch is durable, efficient, and produces no roping.

Hardware: Copper rivets vs. painted zinc alloy. Cast donut buttons vs. press buttons. YKK zippers vs. generic equivalents. Each individual difference is cents. Together, the premium hardware spec adds $10–15 to manufacturing cost per pair.

Batch size: A fast fashion run might produce 50,000–100,000 units of a single cut. Fixed setup costs — machine adjustment, pattern setup, QC protocols — get amortized across enormous unit counts. Premium denim programs often run 500–3,000 units per style. Same fixed costs, far fewer units to absorb them. Per-unit sewing cost is structurally higher at the premium tier regardless of labor geography.

The Brand Premium Layer

Beyond manufacturing cost, retail price includes design, development amortization, marketing, and retail margin. In many apparel categories, 50–60% of retail price is effectively non-manufacturing cost. That holds at both $20 and $300.

Where premium denim differs from a designer t-shirt at similar retail price: the manufacturing cost gap is real and substantial. The additional $250 in a $300 selvedge pair is not purely abstract brand equity stacked on top of a $20 jean's worth of materials. The inputs genuinely cost more.

What may legitimately justify a brand premium in the denim tier:

And the $300 pair doesn't automatically become justified either: brand inflation exists in heritage denim as much as anywhere. The value of this exercise is that you can now ask the right questions before buying.

How to Apply This to Your Buying

Three reader types, three frameworks:

If you're buying for longevity: The per-wear cost calculation often inverts at the premium tier. A well-constructed selvedge pair, properly cared for, lasting 10+ years is not unusual. A $20 pair lasting 5 years is the exception. Rough math: 10 pairs at $20 = $200 over 5 years; one pair at $300 over 12 years = $300. The gap narrows considerably once time enters the equation.

If you're buying for fade development: Ring-spun, rope-dyed, heavyweight denim is not optional for the kind of dimensional fade most denimheads are chasing. Honeycombs, whiskers, tate-ochi — these depend on yarn surface structure and dye layering. $20 jeans will fade. They won't fade like that. The step from open-end to ring-spun matters more for fade quality than almost any other single variable.

If you're buying for utility: $40–80 is genuinely fine for a functional wardrobe choice. Nothing in this breakdown should make anyone feel guilty about practical denim. Jeans started as workwear, and they can stay that way.

The most common mistake isn't overpaying or underpaying. It's spending $300 on premium fabric and then machine-washing it hot every two weeks — treating it like the $20 pair it replaced. Or the reverse: buying something that doesn't fit your actual daily life, however beautiful the selvedge ID stripe looks rolled up.

Knowing the cost structure means knowing what you're actually choosing between. That's where the decision becomes intentional.
