The fitting room is where everything starts — and where most raw denim mistakes happen.
You've found a pair that looks right off the rack. The cut seems correct, the selvedge ID is visible at the outseam, the fabric weight feels serious. Now comes the harder part: what do you actually check once they're on? This matters more with raw denim than with any other category. Raw fabric shrinks. The way a pair fits at purchase directly shapes where the fabric creases and where your fades develop over months and years. A pair that's too tight in the thigh won't let honeycombs form. A rise that feels fine standing up might become miserable through eight hours at a desk. A pair that fits perfectly right now might tighten significantly after a cold soak.
These nine checkpoints aren't a rigid protocol. Think of them as a diagnostic — a way to make a genuinely informed decision before committing to a pair you'll be wearing for the next several years.
1. Waist — Work In a One-Finger Buffer
Almost everyone checks the waist first, and almost everyone makes the same mistake: trusting the tag size. Denim waist measurements — particularly in US and Japanese convention — often run up to an inch larger than actual measurement. On top of that, raw fabric typically shrinks 2–4 cm (roughly one inch) through the waist after the first soak or wash.
Working baseline: you want enough room to slide one finger comfortably into the waistband when buttoned. Two fingers if you're planning a hot soak or machine wash.
What you don't want to do is size up two or three inches to "account for shrinkage." That approach might fix the waist but destroys the fit everywhere else — thigh, seat, rise. If the waist is slightly snug but everything else fits well, that's usually the better trade. Sizing up by multiple inches to solve a waist problem creates four new problems below it.
2. Rise — Always Sit Down in the Fitting Room
Rise reveals itself when you sit, not when you stand. A huge number of buyers choose jeans based on how they feel standing in front of a mirror, then realize weeks later that the rise doesn't work at a desk.
In the fitting room: sit down. Then crouch. Then try to touch the floor. High-rise cuts can create real pressure across the abdomen when seated; low-rise cuts tend to expose the lower back. Neither is necessarily a dealbreaker — but you should feel how the rise behaves across all three positions before deciding whether you can live with it through a full workday.
Rise also affects where whiskers form. Pairs with more rise will crease deeper into the hip crease when seated, building more pronounced whisker lines over time. Lower-rise cuts sit shallower and typically produce subtler hip fades.
3. Hip — The Forward Lunge Test
Stand with your feet together, then take one large step forward and bend the front knee. This is the hip test.
If the fabric pulls tight across the seat in this position, that tension will concentrate in the same spot with every step you take. Over time — especially in raw denim — this shows up as uneven fade at the seat or stress on the inseam seam. A small amount of give is what you're looking for. If you're buying a slim cut by design, know consciously how much tightness you're accepting.
4. Thigh — This Is Where Honeycombs Live or Die
The thigh fit is the most underrated checkpoint for anyone interested in developing strong fade patterns — and it's the one most people completely skip.
Honeycombs (ハチノス) — the compressed diagonal crease clusters behind the knee — form when the fabric has enough room to fold consistently in the same direction as you walk and sit, session after session. Too little thigh room and the fabric stays stretched and flat, unable to crease deeply. Too much room and the folds become irregular, resulting in diffuse rather than defined honeycomb patterns.
A practical check: press your palm flat against your outer thigh. If you can feel the fabric moving and there's still a small gap of air between your hand and the jeans, the thigh fit is in the right range. If the fabric is pressing your hand outward, it's probably too slim for developing structured fades. This single checkpoint has more bearing on your eventual fade result than almost anything else you can verify in a fitting room.
5. Knee — The Deep Squat
Knee room sounds obvious, but it's worth testing with a full deep squat — not just a half-bend.
Adequate knee room means the fabric can bunch and crease consistently at the knee crease over hundreds of wearings. Too little room, and the initial creasing will be irregular, which shows up later as patchy fade at the knee rather than the clean horizontal lines that result from consistent crease patterns.
The first few weeks of breaking in raw denim the knee area will feel stiff regardless — that's the fabric, not a fit problem. Stiffness resolves. A fit problem at the knee doesn't.
6. Inseam and Hem — Decide What You Want First
Before you assess hem length, decide what you want from it: stacked hem (excess fabric bunching at the ankle), clean break (fabric falling flat at the ankle), or a cropped leg above the ankle.
Raw denim typically shrinks 1–2 cm in length after the first soak. Most Japanese and American selvedge jeans come with a standard inseam of 36–38 inches, assuming the wearer will hem them. If you're going stacked, the current hem should sit 3–5 cm below the ankle. If you want a clean break after shrinkage, the pre-wash hem should sit at or just above the ankle.
If chain-stitch hemming is part of your plan — and for most selvedge buyers, it should be — factor that into your decision now rather than after you've bought the jeans.
7. Construction — Flip Them Inside Out for 30 Seconds
This is the checkpoint most people skip, and it tells you the most about long-term durability.
What to look for:
- Chain stitch vs. lock stitch at the hem: Chain stitch is traditional construction and produces a characteristic twisted "roping" effect at the hem as the fabric wears and relaxes. Check by looking at the inside of the hem for a linked loop stitch rather than a standard X-lock.
- Selvedge ID at the coin pocket and waistband: On genuine selvedge construction, you'll see the selvage edge (often with a colored ID thread) folded into the coin pocket opening and sometimes the waistband facing.
- Crotch seam quality: A felled or J-stitched crotch seam distributes stress across a broader area. A flat-felled seam is preferable to overlocked-only construction for long-term wear.
- Gusset presence: Some higher-construction pairs include a reinforcing gusset at the crotch point — a diamond or V-shaped fabric insert. Not universal, but worth noting.
None of this takes more than 30 seconds. Flip the jeans over in the fitting room, look at the crotch seam, check the hem stitch, peek at the coin pocket opening.
8. Fabric Composition Tag — Cotton, Blends, and What Changes
The composition tag tells you how the fabric will age.
100% cotton is the standard for raw selvedge. It shrinks predictably, fades in the characteristic vertical-grain pattern associated with ring-spun or slubby yarn, and develops the stiff break-in character that most raw denim buyers are expecting.
Stretch blends (elastane or spandex) typically account for 1–3% of fabric weight — enough to meaningfully change fade behavior. Blended fabrics tend to produce less sharp contrast between faded and unfaded areas because the stretch fiber prevents the same depth of crease compression that drives strong fade development. They also shrink differently and usually don't develop the same stiff break-in profile. If classic raw denim aging is what you're after, check the tag and confirm 100% cotton.
9. Care Label and Fabric Weight
If the pair lists a fabric weight, use it as context:

The care label also matters. Confirm the fabric is machine-wash or hand-wash acceptable before buying. Dry-clean-only raw denim essentially doesn't exist in this category, but it takes five seconds to verify.
Which Checkpoint Matters Most — By What You Want
No off-the-shelf pair will satisfy every checkpoint perfectly. Prioritize based on your actual goals:
